O! Maha! Omaha...

Chemistry...I do chemistry all day everyday. I am not complaining, it sure keeps me busy! That was my goal with being in Nebraska, but I swear I am much more busy than Chris. I am basically taking AP Chemistry in a month. My summer class consists of people who are basically retaking the course of a semester but in 5 weeks...so with maybe 10% knowledge of chemistry from High School, here I go again! Now what were covalent bonds?

Chris and I have been meeting a lot of friends in Nebraska. Everyone is so friendly here, I love it...I love talking to the strange woman at the bus stop, I love talking to the dad who is in my Chemistry class, I love talking to the bagging employee at the grocery store. Can I just say, I really do love people, that was a big thing for me and going into nursing.

A girl I met from Institute, Justine, we have crossed paths before! "You look really familiar, is your maiden name Call?" We tried out for the BYU tennis team together. She played for BYU Hawaii and she made the BYU team as a walk on and played matches there. So when we went to the courts the other day to play tennis, I was a little nervous about how I would do. I ended up beating her- 4-0. And why didn't I make the BYU team? Well I did meet the love of my life that year... I wouldn't give that up for the world.

Chris's birthday was on Saturday! He is now 28, such an old geezer. He even snores like one too ;). I woke him with some pancakes and smoothie on the table-- since he doesn't like to eat in bed. I had all his friends and family contribute to a funny memory or a fun memory about him and send it to me along with birthday wishes. I even made a music scavenger hunt where he had to go to a certain point in the song and write down the words until all the songs made out a sentence. He helped me with Chemistry (such a good husband) and then we went out for BURGERS AND FRIES! He even got to watch a man flick and have an ice cream cake. I do know my husband well.
Sunday, Chris and I went to a brunch at Scarlett's, (a girl I met at the Married to Medicine Group). They have two huge great danes. Chris-- can we get a dog like that? These dogs look like horses, they almost took me out as I was walking around in their backyard. We had good company quiche, banana bread, and OJ. We have some good friends here in Nebraska, I guess it will do without family for a while ;)

Much love!

First Week in Omaha Nebraska

We made it! First week in Omaha Nebraska. My first impressions of Omaha

  • Surprisingly, there are a lot of hills
  • Wow it's really green!
  • Quiet...almost too quiet...
  • No traffic, Hallelujah!
  • I seriously live in a hotel
  • Nicest people you will ever meet
This place is a whole lot different than Austin. I definitely feel more a part of something here, mostly because I'm not the only one who is married to a doctor now! This week I kept myself entertained with people from the Ward who reached out to me, Omaha Zoo, BBQs for 4th of July, GNO dinner and a movie, Temple at Winter Quarters, Married to Medicine Brunch, and Old Market date :)

Chris worked the 12 to 12 shift this week. He leaves at noon and doesn't get back until 12:30- 1:00 am. Sadly, this next week I wont see him, since I leave for the bus at 9:30 for my first day of school! I am taking my prerequisites for my accelerated BSN for nursing. I have to take Chemistry first in 5 weeks... no joke! So, Chris will be busy, but I am hoping I will too. I am looking for part time jobs as well so i'm keeping my fingers crossed! I can always go back to work at Anthropologie...except I really don't know how much money we will save ;)

Intern year is pretty brutal. You are the scum between their toes as Chris says. The more experienced residents years: 2,3,4 get the better shifts. Chris is working on Emergency Room- so he had a lot of fun stories for the 4th of July. Many having to do with eye injuries and fireworks. Good for a soon to be Opthalmology resident! Seems exciting and he is loving it!

I haven't even gone to the ward yet, and I have already been invited to so many things. I went to a BBQ and root beer float party to watch the fireworks. While everyone else was with their significant other, everyone kept asking, where is Chris? "Oh...I'm actually single, I just wanted to come to the party." After I said JUST KIDDING! A girl looked at me and said, "I thought you were serious!" So Chris wasn't able to meet the people I did at the couple of 4th of July Parties many people probably do think I'm just hanging out! The big fireworks are legal here, so the neighborhoods were having competitions of the biggest fireworks. On the way home was my favorite part. Driving you see these huge fireworks going off all around you in every direction. I missed my husband last night, but it made me happy that he is having so much fun!

The Omaha Zoo is awesome...Okay, I never thought I would say that, since I am not a huge zoo goer. BUT there are some fun exhibits especially the Apes- which are my favorite. It is a clear dome with four or five bubbles that go into the dome so you can walk in it and feel like you are next to the apes. There is this one Ape who is definitely the Patriarch. He is known for charging at the people to see their reactions. A bunch of teenagers were tempting him by banging on the glass. Before you know it the ape is charging right at them! And then you here this "BOING" sound. It is hilarious! I went with a girl Kelly and her baby Adam and helped push the stroller along.

GNO! A couple of girls I met at the 4th of July BBQ decided to go to dinner and a movie Friday night, it was fun to talk and get to know them better. We went to a good restaurant called Ingredient, you can basically create your own meal with any ingredient or they have their options on a menu. We then went to see White House Down, which is a great action thriller! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! That whole time I was just thinking how much Chris would have loved it! It will be a definite RedBox in the future.

Saturday morning Chris and I went to a Married to Medicine Brunch ( A group that was put together by the wives of husbands who are residents at UNMC.) I wish they had this group in Austin, because this is exactly what I needed. People like me who are doing the same exact thing. We have monthly activities and also group meets for similar interests: fitness outdoor activities, scrapbooking, photography, book club. Seriously everything up my ally! Chris kept laughing at me as I made my way down the line and signed up for each and every one of them!

We finished Saturday with some tennis near our apartments (which I love!) I want to teach tennis in the summer so this would be great! We went to Old Market- a downtown cobble street road with antiques, shops, and fun restaurants. We got some great mexican food, and enjoyed the weather. The weather is beautiful right now- a little overcast, but I don't know what everyone is saying about the humidity? It is sooo much better than how I just sweat every time I walked out the door in Austin. One word to describe Omaha: Nostalgia. They love to reminisce about the past- American Baseball (College world series) homemade ice creams, cobblestone roads, antiques, old fashion candy. We went to Hollywood Candy where they had soda pops, a malt bar, old fashion candy, and old cinema theatre. So much fun. Chris got the root beer, and I got the Grab Bag full of random candies. I couldn't take the uncertainty!

Overall, we have loved Omaha so far. It has been so much fun, I just hope it stays that way even when it is winter!

Love you all,

Cameryn
